Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for September 4th, 2024! Summer's warmth has faded, leaving behind cherished memories. I'm feeling a bit wiser, and grateful for sharing that journey with you all. As autumn arrives, I want to express my appreciation – you're the best gaming companions anyone could ask for! Today's article is packed with reviews, new releases, and sales! Let's dive in!
The Nintendo Switch has given us second chances at many classic titles. Trials of Mana, Live A Live, the original Fire Emblem, and now, the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection – finally bringing Miles Edgeworth's unlocalized adventures to English-speaking audiences. This collection cleverly builds upon previous storylines, with the sequel enhancing the original. The games offer a fresh perspective, showcasing the prosecution's side. While the core mechanics remain similar (clue-finding, witness questioning), the unique presentation and Edgeworth's personality add a distinct charm. The pacing can feel less structured, occasionally leading to lengthy cases, but fans of the main series will find this sub-series enjoyable. If the first game feels slow, persevere – the second is significantly better.
Bonus features are generous, including an art and music gallery, a story mode for relaxed play, and the ability to switch between original and updated visuals/soundtracks. A helpful dialogue history feature is also included. Overall, the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection provides a compelling experience, enhanced by its extra content. With this release, nearly every Ace Attorney title (excluding the Professor Layton crossover) is available on Switch. If you've enjoyed previous entries, this is a must-have.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
A sequel to Gimmick! is unexpected! Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful follow-up to the obscure NES title stays true to its predecessor's challenging physics-based platforming. Six lengthy levels provide a steep learning curve. A welcome addition is an easier mode, offering a less demanding experience. The core gameplay remains familiar, utilizing the protagonist's star for attacks and puzzle-solving. Collectibles add replayability, unlocking customization options.
While not excessively long, the game's difficulty remains high. Frequent deaths are inevitable, but generous checkpoints mitigate frustration. The charming visuals and music help maintain engagement, but don't underestimate the challenge. Gimmick! 2 successfully builds upon the original while maintaining its identity. Fans of the first game will be delighted, and challenging platformer enthusiasts should definitely check it out. However, those seeking a casual experience should be warned – it's just as tough as its predecessor.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platforming to a shoot 'em up style reminiscent of Lords of Thunder. Surprisingly, it works well, though the Switch's hardware limitations might impact performance. Despite this, the intense action, soundtrack, and visuals remain engaging. The weapon system adds depth, requiring skillful management of the main gun, melee weapon, and rotating third weapon to overcome challenging encounters. Mastering the rhythm of weapon usage and evasive maneuvers is key.
While different from its predecessor, Mecha Therion maintains a similar atmosphere. It's a stylish, heavy metal-infused shoot 'em up that avoids common genre pitfalls. Performance may be better on other platforms, but the Switch version delivers a satisfying experience.
SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
Licensed games often cater primarily to fans. Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash delivers ample fan service, excelling in its presentation, writing, and meta-systems. However, its appeal for non-fans is limited. The gameplay consists of repetitive mini-games, with a story only truly appreciated by those familiar with the franchise. Even for fans, the emphasis on fan service might overshadow the overall experience. While the visuals and unlockables might keep dedicated fans engaged, the limited gameplay might lead to quick burnout.
SwitchArcade Score: 3/5
Sunsoft is known for its charming 8-bit titles in Japan. Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection showcases three such games: Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. All three are fully localized and include save states, rewind, display options, and art galleries. The games offer a varied experience, with 53 Stations being frustrating but charming, Ripple Island a solid adventure, and The Wing of Madoola an ambitious but uneven action game. While not top-tier NES titles, they offer a unique glimpse into Sunsoft's lesser-known library.
Sunsoft fans and retro gaming enthusiasts will appreciate this collection. The careful localization and inclusion of modern conveniences make this a worthwhile purchase.
