Bayonetta Origins Director Takes Sony

Key Departures at PlatinumGames and Housemarque's New Project

PlatinumGames, known for its action titles like Bayonetta, has experienced a significant exodus of key developers recently. This follows the September 2023 departure of Hideki Kamiya, the creator of Bayonetta, who cited creative differences with the studio's direction. Kamiya's subsequent involvement with a Capcom Okami sequel further fueled speculation about PlatinumGames' future.

Adding to the concerns, several top developers, including Abebe Tinari, director of Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, have reportedly left the studio. Tinari's LinkedIn profile confirms his relocation to Helsinki, Finland, and his new role as a lead game designer at Housemarque, the studio behind the acclaimed Returnal.

Tinari's move to Housemarque is particularly noteworthy given the studio's current focus on a new, unannounced IP. While Housemarque's acquisition by PlayStation and subsequent work on this new project have been ongoing since Returnal's 2021 release, Tinari's expertise could significantly impact its development. A reveal is not anticipated before 2026.

The impact of these departures on PlatinumGames remains uncertain. While the studio is celebrating Bayonetta's 15th anniversary, potentially hinting at a new installment, the future of Project GG, a new IP previously led by Kamiya, is now shrouded in doubt. The project's progress may be significantly affected by his departure. The series of high-profile exits raises questions about the studio's current trajectory and its ability to maintain its creative momentum.
