"Breakout Beyond: A Fresh Twist on Atari's Classic"

The iconic 1976 game Breakout is set to receive a modern makeover nearly 50 years later with the launch of Breakout Beyond. Developed by Choice Provisions, the creators of the acclaimed BIT.TRIP series, this new version retains the classic paddle-and-ball mechanics but introduces a unique twist by shifting the gameplay orientation from vertical to horizontal. As players navigate from left to right, the primary goal remains to break bricks, with escalating combos triggering dazzling lights and special effects.

Breakout Beyond spices up the traditional gameplay with special bricks that can unleash a variety of spectacular effects, from massive explosions to an actual laser cannon. The game is set to feature 72 meticulously designed levels, and for those seeking endless challenges, there's an unlockable endless mode complete with an online global leaderboard. Additionally, players can enjoy the game with a friend through local two-player co-op.

Originally intended as an exclusive title for the Intellivision Amico in 2020, Breakout Beyond's development took a new direction when Atari acquired and decided to complete the project. Ethan Stearns, Atari's senior director of games publishing, expressed excitement about the acquisition, stating, "We're thrilled to be able to bring this gem to our players. The team thought it was a brilliant concept, preserving the heart of Breakout's gameplay while also giving the formula a completely new spin. Breakout Beyond is a worthy new entry into the Breakout pantheon, and we can't wait to see the insane combos brick-breakers will make."

The Intellivision Amico, announced in 2018 with an anticipated 2020 release, has faced numerous delays and setbacks, and has yet to be released. Last year, Atari stepped in to acquire the branding and rights to Intellivision, though this did not include the Amico console itself.

Breakout Beyond is slated for release later this year across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS.
