Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (Civ 7) will make its exclusive debut on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. Announced on February 8, 2025, during the Civ World Summit Event, this marks the franchise's first venture into virtual and mixed reality gaming.

In a recent blog post on 2K’s website, Civ 7 Executive Franchise Producer Dennis Shirk expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming launch, stating, We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!

Meta Director of Games Chris Pruett also shared his confidence in the VR adaptation, saying, With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.

While Civ 7 is available on PlayStation consoles, the VR version will not be released on PSVR2 at this time.

Board-Game Like Construction and Online Multiplayer

Civ 7 VR introduces a unique Command Table, allowing players to strategize and navigate the game world as if they were part of a living tabletop game. Players can choose to zoom out for a broad overview or zoom in to examine the intricate details of buildings and units.

The game supports both virtual reality and mixed reality modes, enabling players to switch seamlessly between them. In VR mode, players find themselves in an ornate museum with a personalized vista based on their chosen leader. In mixed reality, the Command Table dynamically adjusts to the player's real-world environment.

Civ 7 VR offers diverse gameplay options, including single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes. Up to four players can engage using Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets, with the ability to include AI opponents. Whether collaborating to conquer AI foes or competing against human players, the game promises an immersive experience. Online multiplayer requires both a 2K Account and a Meta Account.

Firaxis Games Respond to Player Feedback

Firaxis Games has actively responded to the feedback received during Civ 7’s early access period. Following the Advanced Access launch on February 6, 2025, for Deluxe Edition and Founder’s Edition purchasers, the game garnered mixed reviews on Steam, with many players citing issues with the User Interface.

In response, Firaxis Games committed to enhancing the game's UI, focusing on making interactions more intuitive, improving map readability, and addressing areas of polish such as formatting. They also plan to introduce community-requested features, including teams in multiplayer games and a broader range of map types.

A quality-of-life update is scheduled for March, which will include further UI adjustments, AI balance improvements, diplomacy and crisis enhancements, and additional bug fixes.

Civilization 7 VR is set to launch in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, with no specific release date announced yet. Meanwhile, Civilization 7 is currently in early access and will see its worldwide release on February 11, 2025, across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
