Unboxing the Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition

Unlike standard controllers, this package includes: the controller, braided cable, protective case, a six-button fightpad module, two gates, two analog stick caps, two d-pad caps, a screwdriver, and a blue wireless USB dongle. All items are neatly organized in a high-quality case. The included accessories are themed to match the Tekken 8 aesthetic, though replacements aren't currently widely available.

Compatibility and Connectivity

The controller boasts compatibility with PS5, PS4, and PC. Surprisingly, it functioned flawlessly on Steam Deck without requiring updates, using the included dongle. Wireless functionality on PS consoles also utilizes this dongle, switching between PS4 and PS5 modes seamlessly. This dual-console compatibility is a significant advantage.

Features and Customization

The modular design is a key selling point. Users can switch between symmetric and asymmetric stick layouts, utilize the fightpad for fighting games, and adjust triggers, thumbsticks, and d-pads. This adaptability caters to various gaming styles and genres. Adjustable trigger stops are also beneficial for adapting to different game mechanics. Multiple d-pad options are provided, though the reviewer preferred the default diamond shape.

However, the lack of rumble, haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and gyro/motion control is a notable drawback, especially considering the price point and the availability of more affordable controllers with rumble. The reviewer notes that this might be a limitation imposed by Sony on third-party PS5 controllers.

Four paddle-like buttons are included, mappable to various functions. The reviewer would have preferred removable paddles.

Aesthetics and Ergonomics

The controller's design is visually appealing, with vibrant colors and Tekken 8 branding. While not as sleek as the standard black model, it's attractive. The controller is comfortable and lightweight, enabling extended gaming sessions without fatigue. The grip is particularly effective.

PS5 Performance

While officially licensed, the controller cannot power on the PS5. This appears to be a limitation for third-party PS5 controllers. Haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and gyro are unavailable. However, touchpad and other standard DualSense functionalities are supported.

Steam Deck Performance

The controller works seamlessly on Steam Deck, correctly identified as a PS5 controller, with full share button and touchpad functionality.

Battery Life

A significant advantage over the DualSense and DualSense Edge is the superior battery life. The low battery indicator on the touchpad is also a useful feature.

Software and iOS Compatibility

The accompanying software is only available on the Microsoft Store, preventing the reviewer from testing it. The controller did not work on iOS devices.

Shortcomings

The major drawbacks are the absence of rumble, the low polling rate, the lack of included Hall Effect sensors (sold separately), and the dongle requirement for wireless use. The polling rate issue is particularly disappointing for a "pro" controller. The reviewer also points out the incompatibility of the additional module color options with the controller's aesthetic.

Final Verdict

After extensive use, the controller is enjoyable, but several issues detract from its value at the $200 price point. The lack of rumble (possibly a Sony limitation), the dongle necessity, the extra cost for Hall Effect sticks, and the low polling rate are significant drawbacks. While a strong contender, it falls short of being truly exceptional.
