Capcom has revealed a new remastered version of the original Dead Rising. It's been almost a full decade since the latest Dead Rising title was released back in 2016. After several hit installments on Xbox 360, and Dead Rising 3 serving as a launch title for Xbox One, Dead Rising 4 received mixed reviews, likely leading to Capcom's indefinite shelving of the action-packed zombie-killing franchise.
While the original Dead Rising was exclusive to Xbox 360 when it first launched in 2006, an enhanced version of the game came to all major platforms a decade later in the run-up to Dead Rising 4. Since then, Dead Rising's sister zombie franchise, Resident Evil, has received a ton of attention from Capcom with a flurry of celebrated and successful remakes of classic titles like Resident Evil 2 and 4, as well as new first-person mainline entries, such as Resident Evil Village. With all the success of Resident Evil over the past five years, it's easy to see why its lighter, more action-focused Dead Rising counterpart remained in the shadows for so long.
Now, eight years after the franchise's latest installment, Capcom has announced a current-gen remaster of the original game, named Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. The announcement came by way of a short 40-second YoutTube trailer showing the game's opening moments of Dead Rising protagonist Frank West leaping off a helicopter toward a zombie-infested mall. While the trailer was devoid of platforms or a release date, it's a safe bet that it'll land sometime later this year.
Capcom Reveals Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster
Even though Dead Rising was already enhanced for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in 2016, it'll be nice for fans to get to experience the game with even better performance and visuals. This begs whether the Dead Rising sequels will be next in line to receive the remaster treatment, as some of them are over a decade old. With that said, since Capcom seems to be taking a remaster approach to Dead Rising, at least for the original game, hopes of Resident Evil-style ground-up remakes of these games are slim. It's likely that Capcom sees more value in the proven success of Resident Evil remakes, and working on remakes for two different zombie franchises could muddy the waters. However, the potential for Dead Rising 5 is still very much alive.
2024 has already been home to a bevy of interesting and well-received remasters and remakes thus far. Games like Persona 3 Reload, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Braid: Anniversary Edition, and Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster have pleased gamers and turned new fans on to these beloved titles. If Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster does hit this year, it'll join several other Xbox 360-era remasters like Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, Lollipop Chainsaw: RePOP, and Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered.
