Should You Fight Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?

Engaging Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins is a daunting endeavor. My own experience saw me dedicating over an hour to overcome this titan. Yet, there are compelling reasons to challenge him. Firstly, defeating Lu Bu earns you bragging rights—a true badge of honor among gamers. Secondly, depending on your allegiance to Shu or Wei, you may be forced to confront him during the Battle of Xiapi in Chapter 4. Moreover, triumphing over him at the Battle of Hulao Gate not only grants you the prestigious "The Strongest" trophy but also unlocks the game's ultimate weapon, the halberd, in the post-game, providing a strong incentive to take him down.

Lu Bu’s First Phase

Preparation is key before facing Lu Bu. Equip a weapon like a sword that can deliver multiple hits and stagger him, alongside Battle Arts that are quick to activate, require minimal Bravery, and have a broad range. In my battle, I utilized Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Accessories such as Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell are crucial to boost your health and defense, as Lu Bu's attacks are devastating. Additionally, choose a weapon with a skill that rewards Bravery for each Perfect Evade, as this will be your primary method of gaining Bravery during the fight.

Initially, Lu Bu will be mounted on his iconic horse, Red Hare. This phase is relatively straightforward; Lu Bu charges around the battlefield, occasionally pausing to rest. Seize these moments to strike with your Battle Arts before retreating. His attacks have limited area of effect, except for Red Hare's aerial slam, making them manageable to dodge. Once Lu Bu's health drops to 80%, he dismounts, signaling the start of the real battle.

Lu Bu’s Second Phase

Lu Bu grabbing the Wanderer in Dynasty Warriors: OriginsOn foot, Lu Bu becomes even more ferocious. His swift attacks and rapid movement across the battlefield are marked by a red aura, indicating he cannot be staggered during these maneuvers. He often charges in sets of three, so be ready to evade repeatedly. If he charges without his spear, he's attempting a grab that can severely deplete your health, but it's easily evaded like his other charges.

His most lethal move is signaled by an orange glow, leading to a barrage of three massive arrows fired thrice, capable of juggling and annihilating your health. To counter this, use a long-range Battle Art like Absconding Slash to interrupt him. Close-quarters Battle Arts like Palm Strike are suicidal in this scenario. Keep your Musou gauge charged for emergency invincibility, which can be a lifesaver if you misjudge a dodge or get caught in a combo.

Lu Bu is surprisingly vulnerable to juggling in this phase. Continuous attacks will quickly charge your Battle Arts and deplete his Fortitude meter. Stay close to react swiftly to his moves, and remember, evasion is your best friend.

Lu Bu’s Final Phase

When Lu Bu's health is sufficiently reduced, he enters Musou Rage, marking the final phase. Now unstaggered, he unleashes a relentless barrage of attacks. Your objective is to break his Fortitude before he executes his Musou attack. Use all your remaining resources—activate your Musou attacks, deploy Battle Arts, and strike with everything you've got. If Lu Bu completes his Musou attack, he'll immediately reactivate it, forcing you to restart the phase. Successfully breaking his Fortitude here will finally allow you to defeat this seemingly invincible adversary.

And that’s how to defeat Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins! The game is now available for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
