Should You Free Ilora in Avowed?

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 21,2025

At the start of Avowed, you face a crucial decision: free the suspicious prisoner Ilora from her cell in Fort Northreach, or leave her fate to chance. Your ultimate goal is to use her boat to reach Paradis, but the choice of freeing or abandoning Ilora significantly impacts your journey. This guide explores the consequences of each path.

Should You Free or Leave Ilora?

While Avowed encourages roleplaying your character, freeing Ilora is strongly recommended. This choice simplifies Fort Northreach and unlocks a future side quest.

Freeing Ilora provides invaluable assistance in overcoming Fort Northreach's challenges, including defeating Steadman Ralke, the area boss. Early in the game, your resources are limited, making Ilora's aid essential. Beyond immediate combat advantages, saving Ilora significantly simplifies the later "Escape Plan" side quest (details omitted to avoid spoilers).

How to Free Ilora

Ilora reveals the key to her cell is located in the Warden's Room. Access this room by proceeding to the hallway's end, climbing crates, jumping to the adjacent platform, and entering the passage above. Break through the boards on your right to descend into the Warden's Room. The key is near the door. Note: Regardless of your decision about Ilora, use the key to unlock the adjacent cell and obtain the Deerskin Gloves.

What Happens If You Don't Free Ilora in Avowed?

Choosing not to free Ilora drastically increases the difficulty of Fort Northreach and the later "Escape Plan" quest. Furthermore, Ilora won't remain imprisoned; you'll eventually face her in combat, further complicating your escape. However, this path does allow you to loot Ilora's body after defeating her.

Ultimately, the decision of whether to free Ilora is yours. However, weighing the benefits of assistance in key areas against the increased difficulty of the alternative path strongly suggests freeing her.
