LEGO Lord of the Rings: Shire Sparks Epic Quest

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 13,2025

LEGO enthusiasts and Lord of the Rings fans, mark your calendars! LEGO is set to launch "The Lord of the Rings: The Shire" on April 2 for LEGO Insiders, and on April 5 for everyone else. This release marks the third LEGO LOTR set in the last three years, following the impressive 6,167-piece Rivendell in 2023 and the formidable 5,471-piece Barad-dûr in 2024.

The new 2,017-piece set brings the charm of The Shire to life with meticulously crafted details. Every wall is rounded or curved, and each surface is adorned with accessories, creating an immersive experience. IGN had the privilege of testing this set and found it to be a delightful representation of its subject. However, its pricing is disproportionately expensive compared to the piece count.

Set #10354 meticulously recreates Bilbo Baggins' hobbit-hole during his "eleventy-first" birthday celebration. This set features nine minifigures including Bilbo Baggins, Frodo, Mrs. Proudfoot, Farmer Proudfoot, Merry, Pippin, Rosie Cotton, Samwise Gamgee, and Gandalf the Grey. The home, nestled into a green-bricked hillside, offers a cutaway view revealing three distinct rooms: the main foyer accessible through the iconic round door, a study to the left, and a cozy dining and sitting area to the right.

The construction process involves building these rooms separately and then connecting them with clamps, ensuring a seamless hillside exterior and a continuous interior living space. The set captures the essence of Bilbo's cozy home, complete with patterned rugs, letters from well-wishers, and food scattered around, including a wedge of cheese above the fireplace and a loaf of bread on the windowsill.

The set is rich with artifacts from Bilbo's adventures, such as the Mithril Coat in a chest by the door, a well-worn map on a table, and a sword alongside a parasol in the umbrella stand. A unique LEGO Technic feature allows you to turn a knob to change the fireplace display from a charred envelope to the One Ring, referencing a key moment from the Fellowship of the Ring.

The room designs are wider than tall, reflecting the canonical hobbit architecture and creating a sense of spaciousness. While the interiors are straightforward to build, the exterior requires careful attention to achieve the desired curved and flowing hillside effect. Building The Shire evokes the tactile pleasure of feeling the contours of a landscape, much like running a hand over a globe.

The set emphasizes the harmonious relationship between hobbits and their environment, with the home crowned by a tree with gnarled branches. Additional elements, such as a birthday cake, a Party Tree with lanterns, a patterned tent, a red dragon firework, Gandalf's horse-drawn carriage, and a set of barrels with interlocking gears that make Bilbo "disappear," add to the set's playability and scene-setting capabilities.

Despite its simplicity, which aligns with the unpretentious nature of hobbit life, the LEGO Shire set comes with a steep price tag. Typically, sets are priced at around 10 cents per brick. The 2,017-piece Shire, priced at $270, is 34% above this standard metric, making it feel more like a $200 set. Comparatively, the larger LEGO Star Wars sets also face a pricing premium due to the "Disney tax," but even the 3,943-piece Jabba's Sail Barge, at $500, is less disproportionately priced.

Interestingly, the Shire remains the most affordable option for Lord of the Rings fans, despite being less of a value per brick than the larger Rivendell and Barad-dûr sets. The question remains whether LEGO's brand loyalty and the enduring popularity of Lord of the Rings can justify this pricing model. Despite the cost, the set's aesthetic appeal is undeniable.
