Live-Action Street Fighter Movie Finds a New Director

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 05,2025

Legendary Entertainment's upcoming Street Fighter film adaptation has found its director: Kitao Sakurai, the creative force behind the comedic masterpiece, The Eric Andre Show. This news, reported by The Hollywood Reporter, signals a potentially unique approach to the iconic fighting game franchise.

Capcom's significant involvement ensures faithfulness to the source material, and the film is already slated for release on March 20, 2026.

PlayThis isn't the first cinematic attempt to capture the essence of Street Fighter. The 1994 adaptation, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming-Na Wen, and the late Raul Julia, remains a cult classic despite mixed initial critical reception.

While casting details remain under wraps, fans can anticipate seeing their beloved Street Fighter characters grace the silver screen.

Initially, Danny and Michael Philippou (directors of Talk to Me) were attached to the project but departed in 2023. Sakurai's selection suggests a shift towards a more absurdist, potentially cartoonish tone, a prospect that excites many fans who appreciate the game's over-the-top elements.

In the meantime, players can immerse themselves in the latest installment of the franchise, Street Fighter 6, recently enhanced with the addition of Mai Shiranui. Read IGN's comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review for a detailed analysis.
