Marvel Rivals Season 1 Update Disables Mods

Marvel Rivals Season 1 Update: The End of Custom Mods?

Marvel Rivals' Season 1 update, released January 10, 2025, has reportedly disabled custom-made mods. This seemingly unannounced change prevents players from using the bespoke character skins that were a popular feature since the game's December launch.

Season 1 introduced significant content, including the Fantastic Four as playable heroes (Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman initially, with Thing and Human Torch to follow), a new Battle Pass, updated maps, and a new game mode, Doom Match. However, the simultaneous silencing of mods has left many players disappointed.

NetEase Games, the developer, has consistently maintained that mod usage violates the game's terms of service, even for purely cosmetic modifications, threatening bans for offenders. The Season 1 update appears to have preemptively addressed this through the implementation of hash checking, a security measure verifying data authenticity and effectively blocking most mods.

While not entirely surprising given NetEase's prior stance and actions (including banning a controversial Donald Trump mod), the widespread mod prohibition has understandably upset some players. Creators have expressed frustration on platforms like Twitter, sharing unreleased mods now rendered obsolete.

While some mods contained provocative content, including nude skins that drew complaints, the primary motivation behind NetEase's actions is likely financial. As a free-to-play game, Marvel Rivals relies heavily on in-game purchases of character bundles containing skins, sprays, and other cosmetics. The availability of free, custom cosmetic mods could significantly undermine the game's revenue model. Therefore, the ban on mods, though controversial, is arguably a necessary business decision for the game's long-term viability.
