Pokémon TCG Launch Faces Scalping, Shortages, and Outages Again

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 28,2025

The latest Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) set, *Scarlet & Violet - Destined Rivals*, was fully unveiled on March 24 and is poised for a launch starting on May 30, 2025. However, seasoned collectors might find the launch window familiar, as it has been marred by chaos due to scalpers and store-related issues.

This set has generated significant excitement for several reasons. It marks the return of Trainer's Pokémon cards, a beloved archetype reminiscent of classics like Brock's Sandslash and Rocket's Mewtwo. These cards creatively integrate iconic Trainers with their Pokémon, adding a nostalgic charm to the collection. Furthermore, *Destined Rivals* revolves around Team Rocket, the notorious villains from the first generation of Pokémon games, adding to its allure. Much like the earlier *Prismatic Evolutions* set, which celebrated Eevee evolutions, *Destined Rivals* promises to be a highly sought-after release.

When pre-orders opened, the high demand led to immediate frustrations. Many fans struggled to access the Pokémon Center website to purchase the coveted Elite Trainer Box (ETB), which typically includes card packs and other accessories. The situation was exacerbated by scalpers who swiftly listed pre-orders on platforms like eBay at exorbitant prices, with some listings reaching several hundred dollars for what normally retails at $54.99. Joe Merrick of Serebii expressed his disappointment, reflecting a sentiment shared by many in the community:

"I truly hate this," Merrick wrote. "The way almost all Pokemon TCG content has shifted to financial. The way that people just treat it as investment. The way people just want to flip it. It's disgusting. Shame on all involved."

This issue isn't new; similar challenges were faced with the *Prismatic Evolutions* set and the *Blooming Waters 151* box. The Pokémon Company has acknowledged the situation and, according to PokéBeach, has promised more inventory of the *Destined Rivals* ETB later in the year. Despite these assurances, some customers have reported their ETB orders being cancelled, further frustrating fans eager to enjoy the hobby.

While *Pokémon TCG Pocket* offers a digital alternative to the physical card scarcity, the desire to engage with the traditional form of the game remains strong. A visit to your local card aisle might reveal the difficulty in securing packs, especially during these exciting releases. The community hopes for swift solutions to these ongoing challenges, allowing fans to once again enjoy collecting and playing without the overshadowing influence of scalpers and stock issues.
