Emoak Studio Unveils "Roia," a Serene Mobile Escape

Author:Kristen Update:Jan 20,2025

Mobile gaming's remarkable contribution to game design innovation is undeniable. Smartphones, with their unique buttonless design and massive global reach, have propelled video games into uncharted territories. Roia, a prime example, perfectly embodies this evolution.

This innovative puzzle-adventure is the latest creation from Emoak, the acclaimed indie studio behind successful titles like Paper Climb, Machinaero, and the award-winning Lyxo.

Surprisingly, Roia's core objective is deceptively simple: create a river. Starting from a mountain peak, you guide a cascading stream to the ocean by skillfully shaping the terrain with your finger.

Emoak's press release reveals the deeply personal connection Roia holds for lead designer Tobias Sturn. His childhood memories of playing in the creek behind his grandparents' house, building waterwheels and bridges with his grandfather, heavily influenced the game's design. The game is dedicated to his grandfather, who passed away during its development.

Roia defies easy categorization. While challenges exist, the game's essence lies in its relaxing, meditative gameplay.

Your journey unfolds across beautifully crafted environments – forests, meadows, and charming villages. A helpful white bird guides you, subtly suggesting the correct moves.

The screenshots showcase Roia's elegant, minimalist aesthetic, reminiscent of Monument Valley. However, its captivating soundscape, composed by Johannes Johannson (also behind Lyxo's soundtrack), adds another layer of immersive charm.

Roia is available now on the Google Play Store and the App Store for $2.99.
