Minecraft Creator Hints at Minecraft 2: A Spiritual Successor in the Works?

Minecraft 2 “Basically Announced” By Original Creator

Markus "Notch" Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has sparked excitement among fans by suggesting a potential "Minecraft 2" is on the horizon. While not a direct sequel due to IP rights held by Microsoft, Notch indicated a strong possibility of creating a spiritual successor.

A Poll Reveals the Public's Preference

On January 1st, Notch conducted a poll on X (formerly Twitter) outlining two potential projects: a roguelike/dungeon crawler hybrid and a spiritual successor to his iconic creation. The results overwhelmingly favored the latter, with the "Minecraft 2" option garnering 81.5% of nearly 287,000 votes. This significant public interest prompted Notch to confirm his serious consideration of developing this project.

Notch acknowledged the challenges of creating a spiritual successor, noting the inherent risks involved. However, he expressed a willingness to tackle the project, emphasizing his respect for Mojang Studios and Microsoft's continued work on the original Minecraft. He assured fans that any new project would avoid infringing on their existing work.

Looking Ahead: More Than Just a Game

While fans eagerly anticipate Notch's potential new venture, other Minecraft-related projects are on the way. Minecraft-themed amusement parks are slated to open in the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, and a live-action film, "A Minecraft Movie," is scheduled for release later in 2025. These developments, alongside the possibility of a new game from Notch, ensure the Minecraft universe remains vibrant and engaging for years to come.
