Nintendo Teases "Significant" Switch Joy-Con Update

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice

Emerging circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons could offer a novel functionality: operating as computer mice. While the widespread adoption of this mouse-like control scheme by game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.

The evidence, shared by Famiboards user LiC, originates from Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. LiC's previous analysis of this data fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors. A recent discovery within these manifests reveals references to polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape, described as "mouse soles" and intended "to stick to game console handles." This terminology, typically associated with computer mice, hints at the potential mouse functionality.

Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified. These designations are absent from public component databases, suggesting they represent unreleased products. The data indicates both tapes measure 90 x 90mm, potentially large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, though trimming would likely be necessary.

Not a Novel Concept: Lenovo Legion GO Precedent

While unconventional, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, features a right controller capable of functioning as a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic piece to facilitate smoother surface movement in this mode.

The Legion GO also incorporates magnetic rails for controller attachment—a feature rumored for the Switch 2. These similarities suggest the Legion GO might offer a preview of Nintendo's hybrid console approach.
