In a recent interview with Ikumi Nakamura, Hideki Kamiya, the celebrated game creator, once again expressed his fervent desire to create sequels for both Okami and Viewtiful Joe. This interview, featured on Unseen's YouTube channel, reignited fan hopes for these long-awaited projects.
Kamiya highlighted his strong feeling of responsibility regarding Okami's incomplete narrative. He feels the story ended prematurely, leaving him with a sense of unfinished business. This sentiment was further underscored by a past viral social media exchange with Nakamura hinting at a possible sequel. He even noted Okami's high ranking in a recent Capcom survey of games fans wanted to see sequels for. Similarly, while acknowledging a smaller fanbase, Kamiya also pointed to the incomplete story arc of Viewtiful Joe, humorously noting his own unsuccessful attempts to push for a sequel through Capcom's internal surveys.
This isn't the first time Kamiya has publicly voiced his desire for an Okami sequel. In a previous interview, he discussed the numerous ideas for the game that never made it into the original release, hinting at the potential for a sequel to expand on these concepts. The subsequent release of Okami HD broadened the game's audience, increasing the demand for answers to lingering plot points.
The interview also provided insights into the creative collaboration between Kamiya and Nakamura. Their professional relationship, forged on Okami and later Bayonetta, is marked by mutual respect and a strong creative synergy. Nakamura's contributions to Bayonetta's art and world-building were highlighted, demonstrating her ability to enhance Kamiya's vision.
Despite leaving PlatinumGames, Kamiya remains dedicated to game development. The interview concluded with both developers expressing their hope for future projects and their shared ambition to leave a lasting mark on the gaming industry. The fate of Okami 2 and Viewtiful Joe 3, however, ultimately rests with Capcom's decision. The gaming community eagerly awaits any official announcements.
