Sony has announced a significant change to its PSN account requirements for select PlayStation 5 games ported to PC. Effective after the January 30, 2025 release of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PC, PSN accounts will become optional for several titles.

PSN Accounts No Longer Mandatory (For Select Games)

This change impacts several high-profile releases, including Marvel's Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, and the upcoming PC port of The Last of Us Part II Remastered (April 2025). However, it's important to note that other PC ports, such as Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut and Until Dawn, will continue to require PSN accounts.

Incentives for PSN Account Holders

While PSN accounts are no longer mandatory, Sony is offering incentives for players who choose to log in: trophies, friend management, and exclusive in-game bonuses. These bonuses include:

  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early unlock of the Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and the Miles Morales 2099 Suit.
  • God of War Ragnarök: Access to the Armor of the Black Bear set and a resource bundle.
  • The Last of Us Part II Remastered: 50 bonus points and Ellie's Jordan's Jacket skin.
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: Access to the Nora Valiant outfit.

Sony has indicated that further incentives may be added in the future.

Responding to Previous Backlash

This policy shift follows significant player backlash in 2024. The mandatory PSN account requirement for Helldivers 2 on Steam resulted in delisting in numerous countries lacking PSN support and widespread negative reviews. Similar criticism targeted God of War Ragnarök's PC port. Sony's decision to make PSN accounts optional for these specific titles reflects a response to this feedback and acknowledges the limitations of PSN's global availability. The company's previous justification for mandatory PSN accounts, citing "safety and security," remains unclear for their single-player titles. The limited global reach of PSN (approximately 70+ supported countries) continues to be a point of contention for many players.
