Possible Revival of Scalebound Development?

Scalebound was once hailed as one of the most ambitious action projects of its time, blending dynamic combat, immersive music, and a groundbreaking system of interaction with a colossal dragon companion. This ambitious title was set to be one of the rare Xbox One exclusives that captured the imagination of gamers worldwide. Announced in 2014, the project unfortunately never saw the light of day, as Microsoft officially ceased its development in 2017.

Recently, the official Clovers Inc account on X shared a video featuring Hideki Kamiya and his team revisiting archived gameplay footage of Scalebound. During the review, Kamiya expressed a nostalgic reflection on the game's creation process and proudly reaffirmed his connection to the project, despite its cancellation. Kamiya further amplified the sentiment by retweeting the video with a direct message to Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft's gaming division, stating, "Come on, Phil, let's do this!". This plea underscores Kamiya's ongoing interest in potentially reviving the game, a desire he has voiced since early 2022 when he expressed a wish to discuss with Microsoft the possibility of resuming development.

The topic of Scalebound's return frequently surfaces in gaming circles, with rumors escalating in early 2023 about a possible reboot. Although no official confirmation came from Microsoft, the speculation continues to fuel hope among fans. In an interview with the Japanese publication Game Watch, Phil Spencer was pressed about Scalebound but offered only a smile and a cryptic, "I have nothing to add at this time".

Even if Microsoft shows renewed interest, fans shouldn't expect an immediate revival. Currently, Hideki Kamiya is deeply engaged with the development of a new Okami installment at Clovers Inc. Should Xbox greenlight Scalebound, Kamiya would only be able to commence work after concluding his current commitments. However, the enduring interest in Scalebound after all these years keeps the dream alive that one day, players might finally experience this long-awaited title.
