Bad news for players in the Middle Eastern nation. Authorities in Turkey have decided to block access to the gaming platform Roblox for anyone accessing inside its borders. This unexpected development has left many fans and developers in the country reeling.
On August 7, 2024, the Adana 6th Criminal Court of Peace dropped the ban hammer on Roblox, citing concerns over child safety. But what’s going on here? Let’s get into the details.
The court decision came after allegations that Roblox hosted content that could “lead to child abuse”.
Questioned on the block by Hurriyet Daily News, Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc emphasized that the Turkish government feels it is is taking severe steps to protect its younger citizens.
According to him, this action fits the nation’s constitutional obligation to protect its children. Some have disputed whether this prohibition is appropriate, even if none contest the necessity of safeguarding children online.
Roblox has attracted criticism in regards to some of its policies such as allowing underage creators to develop for monetary gain, though it’s not certain what precise issues with the platform’s terms attracted the block.
Social media lit up with players expressing their frustration, disbelief, and eagerness to find a functioning VPN that will let players bypass the block. Such is the nature of internet embargos.
Others are genuinely concerned about what this means for the future of online gaming in Turkey. If Roblox can get the boot, what’s next?
Some players even consider planning protests, online and in real life to express unhappiness.
This ban isn’t an isolated incident. It’s part of a broader trend where Turkey has come down hard on certain digital platforms.
Just last week, Instagram found itself on the wrong side of a national firewall, with officials citing reasons that ranged from child safety to insults against the nation’s founder. And let’s not forget the recent blocks on Wattpad, Twitch, and Kick.
For many, this move raises questions about digital freedom and the future of online spaces in Turkey. These prohibitions also raise questions about a chilling effect wherein developers and platforms begin restricting themselves to avoid blocks.
Ultimately, even if the Turkey Roblox block was implemented under the pretense of kid safety, many gamers feel they have been cut off from something far more than a game.
