Path of Exile 2 Expeditions: A Comprehensive Guide

Path of Exile 2 introduces four major endgame events: Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions. This guide focuses on Expeditions, a returning mechanic from a previous league, detailing how to find, complete, and maximize rewards from this challenging endgame system.

Locating and Initiating Expeditions

Expedition map nodes on the Atlas are marked with a distinctive light blue, spiral-shaped icon. To guarantee an Expedition encounter, use an Expedition Precursor Tablet in a completed Lost Tower slot.

Once in a map containing an Expedition, locate the marked area and interact with one of four NPCs near a tent. They offer basic instructions, but mastering the mechanics requires further exploration.

The core of the Expedition involves strategically placing Explosives near Markers to trigger events. A new UI element in the bottom-right displays available Explosives.

  • Runic Monsters: Detonating Explosives near Red Markers spawns these powerful enemies. Larger Markers yield larger monster packs. Red Markers are prevalent, and their spawned packs are further enhanced by Unearthed Remnants.
  • Unearthed Remnants: These relics grant beneficial or detrimental modifiers. Examples include increased elemental damage from monsters, offset by increased item rarity from Excavated Chests.
  • Excavated Chests: These chests, spawned by Explosives near Black Markers with the spiral symbol, contain valuable rewards such as Artifacts, Logbooks, powerful currencies, Waystones, and endgame gear.

Explosives have an area of effect (AoE) indicated by a green circle. For optimal farming, avoid overlapping AoE circles to maximize the number of Markers activated. After placing Explosives, interact with the Detonator to trigger the event.

Death resets the map, but you can strategically retreat and return later. The event doesn't end upon leaving the area; detonate Explosives, regroup, and then engage the enemies with powerful AoE abilities.

The Expedition Pinnacle Map and Olroth

Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. These Logbooks unlock the Expedition Pinnacle Map via Dannig in your hideout. Slot the Logbook into the designated slot and click "Open Portals."

This map offers a significantly larger-scale Expedition with increased Explosives. It also introduces Olroth, a challenging Pinnacle Boss, whose appearance chance increases with map level. A skull on the minimap indicates Olroth's presence. Strategic Explosive placement is crucial to reach and engage Olroth.

Defeating Olroth grants double Expedition Passive Skill Tree points. These points enhance the Expedition event, making it more rewarding.

The Expedition Passive Skill Tree

Accessible through the Atlas Passive Skill Tree menu (top-left of the Atlas screen, then top-right), this tree provides modifiers to improve Expedition rewards.

The tree features eight Notable nodes and eight nodes increasing Logbook difficulty (and the Olroth encounter). Each Olroth victory awards double points. Increasing difficulty is necessary to unlock Notable nodes.

Notable Expedition Passive Effect Requirements
Extreme Archaeology Reduces Explosives to 1, but boosts radius by 150%, placement range by 100%, and reduces enemy Life by 20% N/A
Disturbed Rest 50% more Runic Monster Flags N/A
Detailed Records 50% more Logbooks, Logbooks always spawn with 3x Modifiers Disturbed Rest
Timed Detonations 50% more Artifacts, Detonation chains 50% faster N/A
Legendary Battles 50% more Rare monsters, 50% more Exotic Coinage Timed Detonations
Frail Treasures 3x more Excavated Chest Markers, but they disappear after 5 seconds N/A
Weight of History 35% boost to Remnant effects N/A
Unearthed Anomalies Remnants gain an additional Suffix and Prefix modifier Weight of History

Prioritize "Disturbed Rest," "Detailed Records," and "Timed Detonations" for significant reward increases. Then consider "Weight of History," "Unearthed Anomalies," and "Legendary Battles" for further, but more challenging, rewards. Avoid "Extreme Archaeology" due to the significant reduction in Explosives.

Expedition Rewards

The primary rewards are Artifacts, used to trade with specific vendors for gear.

Reward Use Gear
Broken Circle Artifact Gwennen Weapons
Black Scythe Artifact Tujen Belts and Jewelry
Order Artifact Rog Armor
Sun Artifact Dannig Used to acquire other Artifacts
Exotic Coinage Refreshes vendor inventory N/A

Artifacts aren't consumed after map completion. Exotic Coinage refreshes any vendor's inventory. Expedition Logbooks unlock Pinnacle Maps with a chance to encounter Olroth, granting significant rewards and unique items. Mastering Expeditions requires strategic Explosive placement, efficient Remnant utilization, and a well-planned Passive Skill Tree progression.
