Apple Unveils iPhone 16e: The New Budget-Friendly Option

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 09,2025

On Wednesday morning, Apple unveiled the iPhone 16e, now the most budget-friendly option in its current lineup. This new model effectively replaces the 2022 iPhone SE as the go-to affordable choice, though it marks a departure from the substantial discounts that the SE series was known for. Priced at a starting point of $599, the iPhone 16e narrows the price difference with the $799 iPhone 16 released last fall. Pre-orders for the iPhone 16e begin on Friday, Feb. 21, with the official release date set for the following week on Friday, Feb. 28.

The iPhone 16e introduces Apple's new C1 cellular modem, marking the first time this technology appears in a smartphone. Apple has previously enjoyed success with its in-house chips, such as the M1 and subsequent models in its computers, and the A-series chips in its mobile devices. The cellular modem is a crucial yet often overlooked component in smartphones, and any issues with the C1 could lead to connectivity problems. Apple's past experience with the "Antennagate" scandal, where the iPhone 4 struggled with cell signal strength due to antenna design and placement, should hopefully have informed the design of the iPhone 16e's connectivity features.

At first glance, the iPhone 16e bears a striking resemblance to the iPhone 14 from the front. It features an identical 6.1-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2532x1170 and a peak brightness of 1,200 nits. While this isn't as sharp or bright as the iPhone 16, the iPhone 16e does include the Action button and a USB-C port, though it lacks the Camera Control feature.

The back of the iPhone 16e sets it apart with its single 48MP camera, echoing the design of the iPhone SE. This sensor shares similarities with the main camera on the current iPhone 16, but certain premium features like sensor-shift stabilization, the latest Photographic styles, and adjustable focus in portrait mode are reserved for the higher-end model. The front-facing camera, however, is identical to that of the iPhone 16 and includes Face ID technology.

Constructed with an aluminum frame, a glass back, and Apple's Ceramic Shield on the front, the iPhone 16e boasts durability. While Apple touts the Ceramic Shield as "tougher than any smartphone glass" in its press release, it's important to note that a newer version of Ceramic Shield claims to be "two times tougher than any smartphone glass." This raises questions about the durability of the Ceramic Shield used on the iPhone 16e, especially given the wear and tear observed on the iPhone 16's display during reviews.

Internally, the iPhone 16e showcases Apple's strategy of product differentiation. While it shares the "A18" chip with the iPhone 16, it comes with a 4-core GPU instead of the 5-core GPU found in the iPhone 16. This results in a performance gap, expected to be more pronounced compared to the iPhone 16 Pro's A18 Pro chip. However, the iPhone 16e retains the Neural Engine, enabling access to Apple Intelligence features.

The iPhone 16e, priced at $599, reflects necessary compromises to achieve a lower cost than other models in Apple's lineup. While not as heavily discounted as the early iPhone SE models, which launched at $429, the iPhone 16e is based on a design that's only a couple of years old, providing a more modern aesthetic than the dated look of the 2022 iPhone SE.

The real-world performance of the iPhone 16e remains to be seen. With compelling alternatives like the OnePlus 13R available around the $600 mark in the Android market, Apple faces a challenge in attracting buyers who aren't already part of the Apple ecosystem.
