Halo Infinite Design Head\'s Studio Halts Its First Game Project

Author:Kristen Update:Jan 26,2025

Jar of Sparks, the NetEase-backed studio founded by former Halo Infinite design head Jerry Hook, has paused development on its debut game project. The studio is actively seeking a new publishing partner to realize its creative vision.

Hook, who left 343 Industries and Microsoft in 2022 to establish Jar of Sparks, described the initial project as a "next-generation narrative-driven action game." While details remain scarce, the decision to halt development and seek a new partner suggests challenges in bringing the project to fruition under NetEase.

NetEase, a prominent global gaming company, currently supports live-service titles such as Once Human and the recently launched Marvel Rivals. The latter's successful launch and upcoming content updates, including the addition of the Fantastic Four, highlight NetEase's continued investment in live-service games.

Hook's LinkedIn post confirmed the development pause and the studio's search for a new publishing partner capable of supporting their ambitious goals. He expressed pride in the team's innovative work and acknowledged the bold risks taken in pursuit of a unique gaming experience. While layoffs weren't explicitly stated, Hook indicated that team members would be exploring new opportunities, suggesting a restructuring within Jar of Sparks.

This situation mirrors the experience of other veteran developers who have partnered with NetEase, such as former Resident Evil producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi and his studio GPTRACK50.

The future of Jar of Sparks remains uncertain, but the studio's commitment to creating a groundbreaking game is evident. Meanwhile, the Halo franchise, Hook's former domain, is undergoing its own transformation with 343 Industries' rebranding to Halo Studios and a shift to Unreal Engine for future titles. This could potentially signal a renewed focus and a brighter future for the franchise.
