Elden Ring Nightreign Ditching Popular FromSoftware Feature

Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging, But Other Asynchronous Features Enhanced

FromSoftware has confirmed a significant departure from the Soulsborne formula for Elden Ring Nightreign: the absence of an in-game messaging system. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki (in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan), is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions around 40 minutes long, leaves insufficient time for players to engage with the asynchronous messaging system that has become a hallmark of the series.

While this beloved feature is absent, other asynchronous elements will not only return but be improved. The bloodstain mechanic, for example, will be enhanced, allowing players to observe and even loot the ghosts of fallen comrades. This aligns with FromSoftware's goal of a more streamlined, intense experience.

Nightreign's Compressed RPG Design

The removal of the messaging system reflects FromSoftware's broader vision for Nightreign as a "compressed RPG." The three-day structure, also revealed, contributes to this aim of delivering a high-intensity experience with minimal downtime and maximum variety.

While a 2025 release window was announced at TGA 2024, a precise launch date remains unconfirmed.
