Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, former Witcher 3 director and founder of Rebel Wolves, unveils a fresh gameplay mechanic—a concept familiar in pop culture but largely unexplored in video games. Rebel Wolves, the studio behind The Blood of Dawnwalker, boasts several veterans from the Witcher 3 team.
In a PC Gamer interview, Tomaszkiewicz explains his desire to avoid the typical superhero power creep. "It’s hard to tell those stories where the hero just gets stronger and stronger," he states. "I sought a grounded hero, one who solves problems differently, yet still offers a touch of the superhuman."
This led to the creation of Coen, a protagonist embodying the strengths and weaknesses of a half-human, half-vampire. By day, he's vulnerable, but nightfall unlocks supernatural abilities and powers.
"This duality, reminiscent of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, is a well-known pop culture trope, yet untapped in games," Tomaszkiewicz notes. "It adds a layer of complexity, a unique perspective that hasn't been explored before. We're eager to see how players react."
This mechanic introduces both opportunities and limitations. Night battles against non-vampires might prove significantly easier, while daytime quests demand strategic thinking and problem-solving, relying less on supernatural abilities.
Daniel Sadowski, former design director of The Witcher 3, adds another layer of strategic depth: a "time-as-a-resource" mechanic. Revealed in a January 16, 2025 PC Gamer interview, this system ties quests to a strict time frame.
"It forces players to make difficult choices," Sadowski explains. "You'll need to prioritize which quests to pursue, and which to ignore, to maximize your chances against the main enemy. However, multiple approaches will be available, adding to the narrative sandbox."
Players must carefully evaluate the impact of each quest on future missions and relationships. This constraint, Sadowski argues, enhances the player's investment: "Knowing your time is limited clarifies your actions and Coen's motivations."
These interconnected mechanics—day/night duality and time as a resource—elevate every decision. Every action, or inaction, ripples through the narrative, forging a truly unique and impactful gameplay experience.
